After years of thinking that I was crazy because I’d be out of breath from just doing dishes (what a great excuse to not wash dishes by hand, right?!), I was finally diagnosed with asthma at age 45. Whoopee.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of May 2018, 1 in 13 Americans have asthma, representing 26.5 million people. Of these 26.5 million, 6.1 million children and 20.4 million adults suffer from this rotten chronic disease.

The toughest thing about asthma is that it is a chronic condition. There is no end in sight to the misery that is asthma. Not to mention that the medications that should help often have side effects. Side effects of leukotriene modifiers may include depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thinking. Woohoo, sign me up for that fun trip (dripping sarcasm). Use of long-acting beta antagonists may enhance the risk of a severe asthma attack – wait, what? Isn’t that what I’m trying to avoid!? Side effects of albuterol may include headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, and sleep problems. Geez, maybe the asthma’s not so bad after all. I mean, breathing’s overrated, right?
