If you’re looking for a holistic way to lessen anxiety symptoms, chiropractic may be the answer. Chiropractic care is a mind-body approach to health; improve the body to improve the mind. By properly aligning the spine, Dr. Roger allows for better nerve transmission, which, in turn, helps to alleviate anxiety and depression.

The physical symptoms of anxiety and depression often overlap, but are, of course, unique to each patient. Common physical impacts of anxiety and depression include:

  • Fatigue or sleeplessness
  • Muscle tension and stiffness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Aches and pains throughout the body
  • Inability to relax

Physical symptoms can exacerbate mental symptoms, causing anxiety and/or depression to feel even worse. Chiropractic is uniquely positioned to relieve physical symptoms, thereby relieving many mental symptoms as well.

How is this possible?

  1. Because chiropractic focuses on a mind-body approach, a balance can be struck to allow your body to work as it should. When your spine is in alignment, you physically feel better, so you have one less thing to be anxious about. Dr. Roger can also give you simple exercises to maintain your adjustments longer, suggest nutritional changes, and can counsel you regarding supplements which may help your body heal faster (please note: no supplements are sold at Gulph Mills Chiropractic, so there’s no pressure to purchase anything!)
  2. Chiropractic care (including massage) can reduce your blood pressure. Lowering your blood pressure relieves anxiety, and it’s a two-way street, according the Medical News Today. “Anxiety causes the release of stress hormones in the body. These hormones trigger an increase in the heart rate and a narrowing of the blood vessels. Both of these changes cause blood pressure to rise, sometimes dramatically.”[1]
  3.  There are no side effects to chiropractic care! Well, no bad ones, anyway. Chiropractic care is all-natural. You may have the following “side effects:” fewer headaches, better sleep, improved posture, and stronger immune function, just to name a few.
  4. Properly aligned spines trigger the release of positive hormones and reduce the release of stress hormones. Several studies have shown that a properly adjusted body produces more neurotensin (which plays an important role in the digestive processes, among other things), oxytocin (the “love hormone,) which may hold “benefits as a treatment for a number of conditions, including depression, anxiety, and intestinal problems,”[2] and cortisol (which blocks pain deriving from inflammation).
  5. As mentioned previously, chiropractic care and massage may make sleeping a little easier. Chiropractic manipulation can offer deeper sleep due to better nerve function and less tension.
  6.  A terrible side effect of anxiety and depression is often chronic tension headaches or migraines. Chiropractic patients often feel relief of the tension in their muscles, which, in turn, relieves their headaches. As your spine is returned to its correct alignment, surrounding muscles are no longer strained in an unnatural position. This may be one of the biggest impacts that chiropractic care can have on anxiety and depression. When combined with

Believe it or not, chiropractic care actually promotes relaxation. I don’t mean “sitting by the pool with a big glass of lemonade” relaxing, but muscle relaxation – although, when your muscles are relaxed, sitting by the pool sounds like a great idea, am I right? As folks pass me on their way out of the office, I’m always amazed by how many let out a big sigh, as if breathing out all of the tension that was just released by their adjustment. That’s the best statement of anxiety relief I’ve ever heard.

Clearly, chiropractic can improve anxiety symptoms. We don’t promise that you’ll see a result overnight, but with regular chiropractic care, you’ll definitely see an improvement.
