New Year’s Resolutions. Ugh. Do you still make them? Does anyone still make them? Does anyone actually follow through for more than 2 weeks? I’ve decided that instead of making a New Year’s Resolution this year, I’m going to make myself a promise. I think I’m more likely to keep a promise to myself.

So this year, I promise myself that I’m going to find ways to enjoy improving myself: physically, mentally, and as a friend. My goals are simple, but concise.

Physically, I’m going to get on my bike more often. I hate riding outside in the cold, so I’ll be using my indoor bike trainer (it’s one of those things that you attach to the back wheel of your bike & it whirrs away while you binge watch); fun, right?

Mentally, I’m going to take time for myself. I didn’t do that much last year, and I feel like I lost a little bit of my sanity. I’m not one to do yoga or meditate, but I might start going for nice long walks to give myself some thought processing time. I’m also going to try to read more. I feel like I never have time to read unless I’m lounging on a beach in the summer. I think making time to read could definitely improve my wellbeing.

As a friend, I plan to be more mindful of what my friends convey to me. I started noticing last year that some of my friends don’t always say out loud what they need (emotionally), but seem to suggest it with their actions, their choice of wording, and with facial expressions. I started to become more intuitive to their emotional needs and they noticed. One friend mentioned that I can always “read” her, and always manage to calm her and make her feel like there’s less “noise” in her life. That made me so happy, which then led me to want to start reading myself a little better. I took a good, hard look at some of my habits of last year to see which I need to shed and which I should continue.

I’ll be shedding the stress-eating habit. 2019 was a tough year and I feel like I ate way too much sugar, which then caused sleeping issues, skin problems, and weight gain. Because let’s face it, no one turns to carrot sticks when they’re stressed out, am I right?

One thing I’ve been glad that I’ve kept up with, even in the chaos of 2019, was chiropractic care. I always feel such a release of stress and strain when I’m aligned properly. Generally, it was 10 minutes of my life, but that adjustment made everything feel so much smoother. I slept better; I didn’t ache when I woke up, so I didn’t hit the snooze button; I felt like I could do so much more every day because my joints weren’t sore or stuck.

So now I’m thinking …

In addition to my other promises to myself, I think this year I’m going to add therapeutic massage to my care routine. Massage and chiropractic work well together to keep us moving the way we’re meant to, especially as we age. I’m going to test that theory. It sounds like a good idea, right?
