Chiropractic care saved me from the agonizing pain of sciatica during my pregnancy. I was so nervous about going to a chiropractor while pregnant because I already had a bunch of strikes against me: I was a “mature” Mother-to-be, I had gestational diabetes, and a myriad of other horrifying medical maladies related to my womb that you absolutely do not need to know. But the pain was so intense that I couldn’t function, so I headed to a highly-recommended practice: Gulph Mills Chiropractic Center in King of Prussia. Two of my immediate friends had been to Gulph Mills Chiropractic while they were pregnant and raved about how gentle & effective the adjustment was.

Sure enough, as I tentatively walked through the door, I was reassured by the fact that there was a pregnant woman finishing up, toting two other children as well. She was smiling and asked when I was due. We got to talking while her other cuties played with the blocks and toys in the office. Apparently, she had a very similar first pregnancy to mine … loads of issues (this left me wondering how on earth …and maybe why … she is now pregnant with her third, but that’s another story). She had already been a patient at Gulph Mills Chiropractic, so it was a no-brainer for her; she knew she’d get great care.

After my adjustment, I was amazed at how much relief I felt. My sciatica pain was no longer a stabbing, jabbing pain in my … posterior. I also noticed that I felt a lot less pressure in my shoulders. That was 14 years ago. I still believe that chiropractic is the catalyst that got me through that last trimester without bedrest (which would have made me lose it for sure).

Considering how much a woman’s body changes during pregnancy, it’s no wonder so many of us are uncomfortable while we try to handle the hormonal surges & incredible physical changes that nine months brings! Chiropractic can help our bodies to better handle the changes by assuring that … well, things are where they should be, as opposed to where they end up while carrying around a 30 pound weight constantly.

As a first time Mom, I was worried about what a chiropractic adjustment would do to my sweet little bowling ball that I was carrying. Chiropractors are highly trained to gently provide adjustments for women who are pregnant, and Dr. Roger Walker of Gulph Mills Chiropractic Center, is especially good at anticipating fears and questions, but encourages patients to ask whatever is on their mind. He’ll explain an adjustment before he does it so you know what to expect.

Here are a few of the important things that chiropractic can help with during pregnancy:

Restoring Pelvic Balance

Pregnant women often have issues with their pelvic balance. Many women experience pelvic changes during their pregnancy. When the pelvis is not in line, it can restrict the amount of room that the developing baby has. Chiropractors can adjust the pelvic to prevent this issue, also known as intrauterine constraint. This can help lessen the chances of having breeched babies or needing a cesarean delivery.

Restoring Poor Posture

Many women have issues with back pain during pregnancy due to the extra weight they must carry in the front of their body. The protruding abdomen can increase the curve in the back and cause pain and posture issues. Chiropractors can restore proper posture and prevent the stress of pregnancy on the body from causing long-term pain and posture issues.

Controlling Pregnancy Symptoms

Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy. Regular chiropractic care can help women maintain their health during pregnancy, relieve joint and neck pain and control the symptoms of nausea.

Reducing Labor and Delivery Time

Since women who receive regular chiropractic care are taking care of their nervous system, many have found their bodies are better prepared to handle the childbirth process. When the nervous system is working properly, the whole body is working as it should be. With this in mind, many women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy have shorter labor and delivery times.0230614001559838845.jpg
